Modcloth clothes are a bit hit and miss. It's sad, because one of my favourite pairs of shoes came from old MC; they are what ModCLoth does best; that perfect blend of vintage and perennially stylish.
On the other hand, this order wasn't great. The Breathtaking Tiger Lilies skirt came with an incredibly cheap, nasty belt - it was plastic, although pretending to be leather. I kid you not, it smelt like it had come straight from the plastics factory and it wouldn't unkink. The skirt itself was poorly designed - I could feel the elastic in the back twisting and bunching, making the skirt seem chunkier around the middle, which was unflattering.
The 'Have to Tri These' earrings were cute enough, so I kept them, but they were not worth the postage and effort.
The worst things though, for an Aussie, are the exchange rate and shipping costs. I was seduced by the pictures of happy shoppers with their cute outfits... So I paid top american dollar for things that looked like they came from Target. (Target is great but not import-worthy).
I contacted ModCloth to discuss my options for returns and the customer service was wonderful. They actually happily refunded the shipping costs for both items because I was so disappointed in the quality of the skirt. I sent the skirt back and got a refund for that too.
THE VERDICT: It takes ages for the items to arrive. Shipping is expensive, the exchange rate is awful. On the other hand, Customer Service is amazing and the earrings were cute.
If you fall in love with something on MC, it might be worth the effort. Otherwise, give it a miss.
I ordered a lovely pair of shoes from Modcloth. The site recommended I size up. I sized up, and they arrived too large.
That's pretty normal: buying shoes off the web is hard. It's a little annoying that the problem occured because I followed their advice, but online shoe shopping is always challenging and the shoes were gorgeous!
So I ordered them again, one size smaller. Then two days later I went back to the site to buy a gift and a top.
The shoes arrived with two LEFT shoes in the box.
The second order never arrived!
I contacted Modcloth about the shoes and was lucky to receive a refund straight away without having to return the shoes. But on the second lost order, the assistant let me know that Modcloth's policy is not to refund items lost in the post.
Paypal's policy, and retail law, makes it clear that items are the sellers' responsibility until they are delivered. So Modcloth's policy was inappropriate!
Luckily, given that I had just received two left shoes and lost another package, the customer service assistant was very nice and made an exception, refunding the money for the second package.
But I was concerned that if I hadn't had such bad luck, I wouldn't have received the refund for the lost package without a fight.
Because of this, I won't shop with Modcloth again. Their postage is super expensive and they don't offer any assurance of the package arriving. And returns to America are crazy expensive, too.
This was my first purchase from mod cloth (and I have made another order since then which I get to later).
I ordered a "Wine Festival Dress" for $64 + shipping which brought the total to $81 (rounding up). Shipping took less than 14 business days and the dress is nice but does not fit well.
The issue I have with the store is that each item of clothing is sized differently so a size 10 in one dress could fit completely differently (run large/small) compared to the same size in a different dress on the site.
I ordered this dress in size 10 (my normal size) and it is very large on me (but still looks nice and I will still wear it) I promptly put in another order for 2 more dresses and got size 10 again and they run very small and ill fitting.
I chatted online on their website to a customer service representative which was really helpful and instant however there wasn't much she could do about it. In order to return them I must pay for shipping again, which is non refundable.
So all in all, the clothing is unique and very nice however sizing is very difficult compared to other online clothing stores. I am hesitant to buy there again. If you don't shop online normally and don't like paying for shipping then I wouldn't recommend shopping on modcloth. There are a lot of online stores with quality clothing that do not charge shipping and have reliable sizing.
I just adore the variety of vintage, quirky, and retro style clothing at ModCloth. The styling tends to be excellent - great photos, so much eye-candy. That said, here are a few things to note about the site:
* Prices are quoted in USD only, so you'll have to do the conversion yourself. Be mindful of the current exchange rates.
* They ship to Australia, but they do not have a 'free shipping' threshold (i.e. spend $XX and shipping is free).
* Depending on your order, be prepared to factor in around US$20+ for shipping. I paid US$14.90 to ship 2 cropped cardigans (small parcel).
* From experience, it usually takes around 3 weeks for my orders to arrive (I live in a metropolitan area). My cardigans took 22 days to be delivered.
* Extensive range of clothing, accessories, shoes, home wares ranging from cheap (US$35+ for a dress) to expensive (US$180+ for a dress). Some styles can be difficult to find elsewhere, at those prices, so definitely work a look.
* Quality is generally good. So far, I've had no issues with the quality of clothing I have purchased, but I do take the time to read the customer reviews and study the descriptions very closely before purchasing. The customer reviews on the ModCloth site is where you'll find the most useful and honest information about the quality and fit.
* Fit and sizing... forget about it. Most are US sizing, but it doesn't seem consistent at all in practice. You'll just have to read the product descriptions very carefully, then take a punt. When in doubt, I size up. I figure I can always have the clothing taken in.
* Returning items Modcloth in the US just seems like too much of a hassle at the moment, so proceed with caution.
* ModCloth customer service is excellent though. You can live chat with their CS team, and they are very helpful in answering all your questions. I've had to consult them on sizing conundrums.
Purchased 2 dresses of very different styles for my partner. The items were shipped within 3 days and were delivered in Australia a week later. The website gives enough details about the material, length to make the right size choice. Both dresses look great.
I would definitely recommend the website to anyone and will most likely use it again!
I purchased the Too Much Fun dress in Gardens and Cookout Crimson as possible bridesmaid's dresses for my two sisters - who are very different sizes. The quality of the dresses was lovely, and the cut was flattering, though perhaps more so in the smaller size.
The shipping took several weeks (the dresses had to come from America) and was not cheap, and the dresses were a little overpriced for cotton numbers. Nevertheless they have some great stuff and I will definitely shop here again.
I purchased two dresses from Modcloth, the Weave Come So Far Dress and the Afternoon at the Arboretum Dress I was extremely impressed with the quality of both dresses and felt like I received value for money. The only disappointing element was that the belt from the "Afternoon at the Arboretum" Dress was poor quality. The dress itself is very nice and both exceeded my expectations. Shipping took 7 days (from USA).
