Often quicker to buy in store than Click n Collect and wait and wait...
Ordered a screw driver kit set for pick up at my local store.
i received an email confirming my order, with a statement to call the store if my order was not prepared after 24 hours.
having purchased using click and collect before, i knew that a 24 hour turnaround time was very, very optimistic, so i decided to wait (i was in no rush). 2 weeks later, i received an email stating that my order was ready for pick up.
i went in store a few days later and finally collected my item.
i'm not sure why the orders take so long to be processed, nor where the delays lie - is it payment confirmation, staff being overwhelmed and overworked instore & dealing with online orders at the same time? service also varies greatly between stores.
i had physically visited the store i was expecting my click and collect item from, and saw that they had plenty of stock available (on the counter no less), but saw that they were very busy (overwhelmed) so did not bother them
If you're happy to buy at a good price and even happier to wait (often) extended periods of time for your order, and enjoy hit & miss (more miss than hit) service, then i'm happy to recommend Dick Smith as a place to purchase. Otherwise, i'd avoid them

Delivery Service is terrible
I bought a Sony 40" Tv for my boyfriends birthday, paid the extra $80 to have it delivered in time for it. There was some sort of mix up with delivery times, so i called them up and had it scheduled for the next day. Waited pretty much all day for it, driver called me up and apologised for the delay.
Overall wouldnt pay the extra for delivery, just click and collect seems easier. Was also supposed to get a pair of 3d Glasses with the unit, they never came.

awful, awful app. comparably slow shipping time with subpar communication
decided to give the new dick smith android app a go and ordered a 1.5TB Toshiba Portable Hard Drive, that was an advertised special in their catalogue. delivery was free
firstly, the experience with the app was INCREDIBLY painful. finding the portable hard drive was an effort (it wasnt in the logical category - the 500Gb was there, but not the 1.5TB). a search finally revealed it. in between all this, the app kept crashing or unexpectedly logging out. no idea why. adding the item to the cart also resulted in app crashes (and it doesnt save your item in the cart, so you have to restart the process over again)
i decided to try and fill out my details first and then try to make the purchase. i previously had an account with dick smith, but the app wouldnt recognise my login details. somehow resetting my password (from a desktop browser) made it work.
mind you, the whole time, the app is still crashing
cutting it short, i finally (after around 2 hours and 25+ attempts) managed to place my order and make a payment. confirmation of my order arrived the next day (i actually thought it had failed as im used to receiving confirmation emails within 5-10 minutes)
finally 6 days later (i was just about to call dick smith and query my order status as there was no communication for such a long time), i received an email stating the my item had been shipped via AAE with a tracking number and link (the link went to a blank page...)
2 days after that, my item arrived.
overall, im happy i (finally) got my item.
BUT avoid the app like the plague! its so badly designed that only my sheer stubbornness got my order through. i also felt that delivery and communication of order details were quite lacking. im surprised it took 6 days to have the item ready to be shipped, especially compared to other experiences ive had with other retailers
next time, im more likely to walk into a store and buy the item or order through their regular website - its a lot less painful. that app REALLY needs ALOT of work done to it

Poor stock management systems and refund process
Ordered a powerbank and a pair of headphones from Dick Smith
I arranged for pick up in store at my closest store.
After a few days after my order, i was given a call and told that my headphones were on backorder for up to 6 weeks (even though the store i had selected for pick up had stated they were in stock). My powerbank was available for pickup.
I decided to ask for a refund for the headphones as 6 weeks was too long for me to wait. As i had paid via paypal, i was told that it would also take 6 weeks for their headoffice to process the refund.
A bit of a joke. I picked up my powerbank and i'm currently still waiting for my paypal refund to be processed...
Even though this buying experience was exceptionally poor, so long as the right product and price, i'd still buy from Dick Smith again

Consumer Laws? What are they?
Had a printer which failed badly half way through warranty. It was only printing parts of lines of print. Went through all the maintenance then returned to store with my receipt. They agreed there was a problem and sent it off for up to 25 days to assess it. Now under consumer law a major fault (and let's face it, it was) I should get choice of refund or exchange. Instead of which I get printer taken away and they even took my receipt. Go elsewhere as no customer service. Have reported them to ACCC

Needs better customer service and quality control
Placed an order on a Panasonic 127cm plasma TV for $999 during their end of financial year sales.
Required credit card verification, even though I had no issues with my account details when I purchased a surge protector just a month beforehand.
When I noticed that the product ID in my account was for a completely different TV (43' LCD rather than 50' Plasma) it took them until the next week before I could get a response from them and sort out the problem. Got various responses from them saying item was in stock, and even managed to receive a phone call from them saying they managed to source it from an interstate store (NSW) and would be shipped to Victoria.
However when I contacted them again, I got two completely different replies saying the THP50S10A which I initially order was no longer in stock, and that a TH-L37U20, which I had never ordered was going to be dispatched. Had to call them again to sort this issue out, and it took them a while for them to figure out their own mistake, not the mention the grievances I had when trying to obtain a refund for all this mess.
Would never recommend purchasing from them, even if they have reasonably priced items. Once you encounter an issue with them, you will dread having to deal with their customer support.
Online order with credit card cancelled and forced to use PayPal, at the end it was oversold.
DO NOT RISK YOUR PERSONAL DATA WITH THEM - There are much better online retailers than this one. Lesson learnt for me: never again.
I put my order for a Toshiba following their EOFY misleading online publicity, but the laptops were oversold and they cancelled it next day arguing "Credit Card payment issues" and force you to re-do the transaction only via PayPal, no other options given.
I'm usually very understanding of delays and problems that may arise when buying online. But in this case I'm not going to be so much: First and very last time I buy online with Dick Smith.
Their call center is unable to do anything else than reading from a screen and only works until 3pm WA time. My emails are still unanswered. I'm very surprised people still buying from them.
